Debian 5 works well enough, with the manual installation of the B43cutter application, wireless works. Use r driver instead. I was able to fix this by using fdisk from the bash console to delete the existing partition and adding a new one.

Regarding the Debian install being "hard to believe", feel free to read about it here -- "Installation via Debian Installer". First, I plugged it into Ethernet and tried to install the driver with the Additional Drivers window. I have the packages "firmware-linux-free" and "firmware-linux-nonfree" installed.
